Several Nato war ships passed Penarth seafront this morning, heading into Cardiff Docks.

Nub News understands that the vessels are enroute to the north-west of Scotland, to join Exercise Strike Warrior, a training operation involving more than 20 warships, three submarines and 150 aircraft from 11 nations.

Olav Tryggvason a patrol vessel built in 2010, sails under the flag of Norway. Her length overall is 49.6 meters, and her width is 10.45 meters.

Sailing under the Latvian flag, the M06 warship is 52 meters long and 8 metres wide. The vessel left Eemshaven, in the Netherlands, almost four days ago.

The 51-metre long M924 is sailing under the Belgian flag. It left Zeebrugge just over three days ago.

Two vessels sailing with the German flag are the M1069 and the A 511. The former is 55-metres long, and also left Eemshaven four days ago.

The 101-metre A 511, classed as a Military Ops ship, departed from Eemshaven on 7 September. She carries the NATO emblem on her funnel.

Exercise Strike Warrior is a final test for the Carrier Strike Group ahead of its first operational deployment to the Mediterranean, Indian Ocean and the Asia Pacific.

The two-week long exercise will see the task group pitted against warships from NATO's Standing Maritime Group 1 to prove it is capable of undertaking high-intensity operations against the most demanding adversaries.

After the exercise, the Carrier Strike Group will be passed as ready for deployment and will begin their operational deployment around the globe, with aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth leading the way.
