WATCH: Grebes 'courtship dance' in Penarth Marina

By Ellyn Wright 28th Mar 2021

Two grebes have been spotted in Penarth Marina engaging in a 'dance of courtship'.

Come springtime, the birds use their facial ruffs and ear tufts, known as tippets, in a special ceremony.

Facing each other, the grebes flick their heads from side to side or slide towards each other, while sitting low in the water.

The peak of their ritual is the 'weed dance' in which both birds, holding tufts of water weeds in their bills, paddle quickly to push their chests together.

They flick beaks full of water and weeds at each other and with one final head shake, the weed is dropped, and the deal is sealed.

In this video, taken by Lowri Shorrock at Penarth Marina, the birds can be seen mirroring one another, bending their necks and shaking their heads.
