Dogs are also encouraged to celebrate Valentine's Day this weekend as a local charity will be hosting a dog Valentine's party at Llandough Memorial Hall on Sunday.

Guests can bring their furry friends to the event, hosted by The Rescue Hotel, for an afternoon of lots of social activities for the dogs to make new friends.

You can have a family photo in the Valentine's photobooth, meet with a dog cartoon artist for a drawing, and there will be chances to win prizes including a £60 Bill's voucher and dinner for two at Revolución de Cuba.

There is also a chance to be crowned 'Best Dressed' and there will be plenty of 'doggy cupcakes' throughout the day.

Greta Sullivan, 58, director of The Rescue Hotel and organiser of the event, has been a volunteer dog walker at Cardiff Dogs Home for almost seven years. "I've organised two of these events already: one for Halloween at Llandough Memorial Hall and the other was for Christmas at St Augustine's Hall," said Greta. "Both were really successful. More than 30 dogs turned up at the Christmas event and we raised about £1,200."

Greta hopes to see the same level of success at the Valentine's Day event on Sunday. "A lot of people that came to the first event also turned up to St Augustine's Hall at Christmas," said Greta. "We hope to continue hosting these events in the future. We have already secured a space for an Easter-themed event in April, so it looks promising."

The Rescue Hotel is a charity that was set up two years ago and supports Cardiff Dogs Home fundraising. The organisation also works with celebrities such as former rugby player, Sam Warburton, who is currently raising money for new kennels at the centre.

A target figure of £500,000 was set by the charity in October 2020 and The Rescue Hotel has already raised 45% of their target.
