Penarth residents may have noticed a van driving around over the past few days delivering a message to stay inside and save lives during the coronavirus lockdown.

The Vale of Glamorgan Council is behind the public messaging service that has taken place this weekend.

The tannoy message said: ''Please stay home, protect the NHS and help save lives.

''Observe social distancing or risk being reported to the Police.

''Thank you for your cooperation.''

Many residents heard the announcement but were unsure where it had come from. The council explained what it was all about on their social media page.

They said: ''We understand that staying indoors for long periods of time can be difficult. But if we all follow Government guidelines, we can help stop the spread, protect the NHS and save lives.

''We now have vehicles out 7 days a week reminding residents about the importance of only going outside for food, health reasons or work (if you cannot work from home).

''We've also placed temporary signs across the Vale, if you see one, think about your journey, is it essential?''
