Health Minister Vaughan Gething has announced that the the "next big effort" is to vaccinate people in the priority groups five to nine while continuing the early stages of administering second doses to vulnerable groups.

According to Public Health Wales, the vaccination groups are as follows:

  1. residents in a care home for older adults and their carers
  2. all those 80 years of age and over and frontline health and social care workers
  3. all those 75 years of age and over
  4. all those 70 years of age and over and clinically extremely vulnerable individuals
  5. all those 65 years of age and over
  6. all individuals aged 16 years to 64 years with underlying health conditions which put them at higher risk of serious disease and mortality
  7. all those 60 years of age and over
  8. all those 55 years of age and over
  9. all those 50 years of age and over

Mr Gething said appointments will first be offered to people aged 65 to 69, as well as younger people with an underlying health condition or in residential care, as well as a "great many unpaid carers who are looking after people who vulnerable".

Members of these groups should wait to be contacted directly by the NHS. This will come either in the form of a phone call or by letter.

The announcement came just two days after Wales became the first UK nation to claim that it has offered all those in the four most vulnerable groups the first dose.

Nub News has received various complaints regarding vulnerable people saying they have not been contacted to arrange an appointment. According to Mr Gething, the number of such people is currently unknown.

"We are working with the NHS in every part of Wales to ensure no one is left behind. If people are waiting for an appointment and for vaccines to be delivered, there will be understandable anxiety," he said.

"But when you look at the figures of the number of people we have reached, I think that should give people a continuing sense of confidence.

"The NHS won't get left behind."

At the time of writing, the latest figures show that 784,809 people have been vaccinated in Wales, or one in four of the Welsh population.

Mr Gething repeated the Welsh Government's commitment to have contacted the entire population for a vaccination appointment by the beginning of May.

"We can have some confidence that we will get to everyone in groups one to nine by the end of April if supply lines remain as we expect."
