Turner House Reopening - A COVID-19 Update

The Welsh Government's latest COVID-19 restrictions have cast uncertainty over how the reopening of Turner House will be able to take place.

With Wales entering a "Level Four" lockdown over the weekend, all entertainment venues will remain closed for at least three weeks.

Penarth Town Council are currently exploring various options for how to proceed with the iconic gallery's return.

Turner House had been due to reopen to the public on 24 January with a new Hayward Gallery Touring show of screen-prints by Eduardo Paolozzi.

The first of many exciting displays, the date was to herald a new beginning for the building, which had been vacant since 2016 when the Welsh Centre for Photography departed.

At a meeting on Thursday (17 December), councillors discussed the possibility of delaying the event or possibly staging a "virtual tour" until restrictions are relaxed.

Nicholas McDonald, Penarth Town Council's Principal Officer for Services Development, says preparations for opening day are continuing.

"The team are very keen for people to be able to experience the exhibition," he told Nub news.

"[We are] are investigating any ways of making the work digitally available for any period of time that visits to the gallery space are not permitted, with our partners at the Southbank Centre."

According to Mr McDonald, discussions with the Southbank Centre - who are responsible for the Hayward Gallery and its touring shows - are ongoing regarding licensing issues.

"Our planned events programme has of course been affected by the ongoing pandemic and we cannot definitively say what will be allowed towards the end of January," he added.

"However, we remain passionately committed to bringing The Turner House to Penarth and look forward to welcoming people through its doors."
