Tennis club slashes fees to encourage young people to take up sport

By Nub News Reporter 13th Mar 2025

A Penarth sports club is throwing open its doors to young people offering a full year of tennis from just £5.

Penarth Lawn Tennis Club has temporarily slashed membership prices for under-18s to a fraction of their normal cost in an effort to get more young people involved in the sport.

"We really want more young people learning and playing tennis, having fun and getting fit," said the town centre club's junior co-ordinator, Julia Esseen.

"We thought the best way to do this was to make our membership offer attractive and accessible to everyone."

Under the limited-time membership offer, children under 13-years-old can join for a year for £5. For 13-17-year-olds it's just £30.

Junior members get the right to book courts before 6pm during the week and at any time on weekends. They also get access to discounted coaching.

Throughout the year, junior members also have access to regular junior social events that include our Friday Junior Social sessions.

"It's an amazing offer. As a club we recognise the importance of encouraging young people to participate in sport which we hope will foster a lifetime of enjoying tennis," said Ms Esseen.

The club said that this is a limited time offer on a first come first served basis. Normally under-13s pay £29 and under-18s pay £67 a year.

To take up the offer, under-13 players need to be accompanied by an adult member, so a parent or guardian will need to buy a social membership for £35.

As social members they get full access to the club's social events, discounts and priority booking for major events, and discounts at the popular club bar. Social members can also play tennis with their children on the club's six courts.

Head coach Rob Cuningham said: "Tennis is a great sport for young people to take up. The skills learned on a tennis court are transferable to many walks of life, not just other sports. Joining PLTC and accessing our junior social sessions is a very affordable way to start playing tennis."

"Tennis is also a great way to spend time with the family. It doesn't take long for parents to see the benefits of membership. With modified versions of the game, such as mini tennis and Pickleball, all ages can play together making tennis the perfect activity to get exercise and be outside whilst spending quality time with family and friends."

Anyone wanting to join can do so on the club website: www.pltc.org.uk
