Sully man to cycle across Wales for men's mental health

By Alex Jones 9th Nov 2020

At the end of November, 21-year-old Tomos Hill will cycle from Anglesey to his home in Sully to raise money and awareness for men's mental health.

All proceeds will go to Movember, the men's health charity,

"People raise money for Movember by growing a moustache," he tells Nub News. "But I can't grow facial hair so I had to think of something else."

Last year, Tomos ran 60 kilometres throughout the month of November to raise funds for the same cause.

He did so after his cousin, Tom Routledge, tragically committed suicide on 6 July 2019. Tom was only 31-years-old.

"This year I just wanted to do something a little more challenging. When you're raising money for mental health awareness during a very difficult time, I think it makes sense to do something more difficult."

Difficult it certainly is. In the final week of November, Tomos and his friend will be taken to Anglesey where they will stay the night. They have then given themselves 36 hours to cycle 230 miles and ascend a total of 8,000 feet.

"Apparently the cycling alone should take 26 hours, so we really haven't given ourselves much time. But if I do it in under 36 hours then my brother will double his £50 donation, so it's worth it."

The challenge is compounded by Tomos' cycling inexperience.

"I have a good bike but that's about it. I've probably been cycling less than ten times this year. Both my friend and I have done no preparation whatsoever."

But Tomos says he will be motivated by the nature of the cause, which he says is now more urgent than ever before.

"I've seen first-hand the impact COVID is having on mental health and wellbeing. Mental health issues are massively on the rise but the resources to help people cope with them have been stripped. Hopefully I can raise not only awareness but also enough money to make a bit of a difference. It really is more important now than ever before."

Tomos has already raised £500. If he reaches £700, his cycling attire will be chosen by a friend.

"I've been told it will be warm so I won't die of hypothermia. However, it will be bright and embarrassing."
