Stol Coffee Update: One man's mission to spread joy during the firebreak

Anyone who has bought a Stol Coffee (or cookie) will tell you: Piotr Skoczylas is an idealist.

Get him started and he'll talk for hours about community, togetherness, fair trade, the dangers of social media and the importance of "meaningful conversations" - which is quickly becoming his catchphrase.

But unlike most idealists, accused of dreaming up the unattainable, Piotr is pedalling around to make his vision of Penarth a reality.

He says the current climate spurs him on.

"Firebreak has obviously been bad for the business," he tells me after we bump into one another in Alexandra Park. "I can't do all the group meet-ups I used to, which is obviously not great financially - hopefully I'll be able to pay my bills."

"But in some ways it's the best time because I know what I'm doing makes a difference. Just the other day, I delivered a cookie bought by someone's friend for their birthday while they were working from. I could tell it made them feel special. Little things like that are priceless.

"I don't need a six figure salary. I just want to feel useful in my community."

If Piotr is becoming well-known in Penarth, it's as much for his personality as for his coffee.

Deliveries are allowed during the firebreak, and Piotr's "cookies and coffees to your door" service has become his main source of income.

"It's great because lots of people are working from home and maybe living alone and sometimes those few minutes I spend with them at their doorstep is their only face-to-face interaction of the day.

"So it doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things if I'm a couple of minutes late for my next delivery. What matters is that we have meaningful conversations and fight against mental health issues in lockdown."

Don't just take Piotr's word for it. While the two of us chatted, a few other regulars joined for a coffee and chinwag (social distancing was strictly adhered to).

"Honestly, it's done wonders for my mental health," one tells me. "Knowing that Piotr will be here in the park for a socially-distanced coffee and a chat genuinely gets me out of bed in the morning."

"I just like the coffee," another laughs.
