New separated kerbside recycling bags and caddies are coming to Penarth in 2021.
The measure - which aims ease the sorting process, improve recycling efficiency and minimise waste - will entail residents sorting their own recycling between three new multicoloured receptacles.
The current three rubbish containers (blue bag for recycling, green caddy for food waste and green bag for garden waste) will be joined by an orange bag for cardboard, a white bag for paper and a grey caddy for glass bottles and jars.
The containers will be laid out on the kerbside for weekly collection.
Barry and the rural Vale are set to receive the new containers in October before the scheme is rolled out to Penarth in the new year.
Cllr Peter King, Vale of Glamorgan cabinet member for Neighbourhood Services and Transport, has told Nub News:
Cllr Peter King, Vale of Glamorgan Council Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood Services and Transport, said: "Our new source-separated recycling system will help ensure a higher proportion of material collected can be recycled. That is a more cost-effective way to operate, better for the environment and in line with Welsh Government requirements.
"The current co-mingled method of recycling does not produce such good quality material, meaning less of it can actually be recycled. Often that means it is rejected by UK-based processors and ends up being exported abroad, sometimes as far away as Asia.
"As items have been separated at source, the new system ensures a high-quality product. This is in high demand with UK-based processors and a far greener, efficient way of operating."
