An update on the LibDem 'Saving The Kymin' Petition

From a position only a few months ago where the Vale of Glamorgan council stated that the Kymin and grounds were "surplus to requirements".

We are pleased that the tremendous support given by the community to our 'Save The Kymin' petition has resulted in a possible change of heart by the council.

We understand that marketing for future tenants of the Kymin will be launched during January next year, and it is the intention that the building will be let on a long lease basis.

A council planning statement will be issued at the time of tendering, but it is confirmed by the council that the building has County Treasure status and that the intention is to retain the building rather than demolish it.

We do not see this as the end of the matter, the building and grounds were given to the people of Penarth and we wish to see the Kymin and grounds once again made available for community use.

We are aware that at least one bidder for the lease, a local charity, proposes to use part of the building as office space whilst making function rooms available for hire. They also propose to continue to allow full open access to the grounds for the local community to enjoy.

Although It is a shame that it took our petition for the council to realise how strong people felt about the Kymin and for them to act, we now hope that they are able to select a tenant that will restore and maintain this iconic landmark and grounds for the community of Penarth.
