Sound recording engineer and Penarth resident Andrew Mabey has enrolled in an independent scheme that monitors road traffic levels, becoming the first person in the town to do so.

He yesterday received a free "WeCount Telraam", a sensor that attaches to users' windows and counts car traffic as it passes by.

According to their website, WeCount aims to "empower citizens to take a leading role in the production of data, evidence and knowledge around mobility in their own neighborhoods, and at street level."

They currently operate in Madrid, Barcelona, Ljubljana, Dublin, Leuven, Cardiff, and now Penarth.

Andrew's sensor is currently collecting data on Windsor Terrace. He encourages other residents to join the scheme.

"I've always been concerned about the levels of traffic in Penarth, but you can't really mount a case to the Vale without a presenting data," he told Nub News.

"I don't have time to stand at the side of the road with a clicker and anecdotes are no substitute for data. So I just thought this would be great - get a counter so I can have some ammunition to bring to the council.

"It's free and they even deliver it to your door. Anybody can set it up even if you have very little technical knowledge.

"Windsor Road is one of only non-pedestrianised town centres in the county. It seems to be working fine but it isn't very pleasant."

"Living on one of the town's big thoroughfares, as residents we're suffering. We have loads of traffic volume and pollution but gain nothing from it."

For more information or to enroll, visit the WeCount website.
