Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced a national clap at 6pm in memory of Captain Sir Tom Moore and for all the NHS workers for whom he had raised money.

Tributes have been made to Captain Tom, who sadly passed away yesterday with Coronavirus, aged 100.

Captain Tom inspired the nation in April 2020 by walking lengths of his garden to raise money for NHS Charities Together, with a goal of reaching £1,000 by his hundredth birthday.

In the 24 days that followed, Captain Tom became a household name. His efforts made international headlines, and he received over 1.5 million individual donations.

On his hundredth birthday on 30 April, Captain Tom had raised a grand total of £32.79 million. His birthday was marked with flypasts from the Royal Airforce and British Army. He received over 150,000 birthday cards and was appointed an honorary colonel of the Army Foundation College.

In July 2020, Captain Tom was knighted by the Queen at Windsor Castle. He performed in a cover version of the song "You'll Never Walk Alone" sung by Michael Ball. The single topped the UK music charts, making him the oldest person to achieve a UK number one.

The Queen led tributes to Captain Sir Tom, "recognising the inspiration he provided for the whole nation and others across the world".

His daughters said they shared laughter and tears with their father in their final hours together.

Announcing his passing, Hannah Ingram-Moore and Lucy Teixeira said the last year of their father's life had been "nothing short of remarkable".

He tested positive for Covid-19 last week. His family said due to other medication he was receiving for pneumonia, he was unable to be vaccinated.

South Wales Police said: "Rest in peace Captain Sir Tom Moore.

"Your determination, and the hope you gave us, has been an inspiration to so many throughout the tough times of the last 10 months.

"Our thoughts and condolences are with your family and friends."

A shared statement from the RBL said: "He epitomised the indomitable spirit of our wartime generation and was a true inspiration to millions of people worldwide during some of the most challenging of times in recent history, bringing the nation together in celebration of his fundraising efforts.

"Sir Tom will be remembered as a shining beacon of hope in what was a difficult year for all."
