Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced he will resign today (July 7).

It comes after mounting pressure and more than 50 government resignations. 

Nadhim Zahawi, Mr Johnson's newly-appointed chancellor, had also called for the PM to step down.

12:17: Sir Robert Buckland has been appointed as the new Welsh secretary.

11:40: Cabinet reshuffle starts - Greg Clark replaces Michael Gove as levelling up secretary and James Cleverly is appointed education secretary.

10:23: Leighton Rowlands, chairman of the Vale of Glamorgan Conservatives Association, tells Nub News: "The PM has done the right and honourable thing in standing down.

"It is now for the Conservative Party to elect a new leader so we can deliver on the manifesto that we were elected to do back in 2019.

"And to help residents with the cost of living." 

10:16: Alun Cairns MP tells Nub News: "The Prime Minister's resignation was inevitable and I am sorry that it has taken longer than I hoped. 

"We must have a swift transition in power, with a new Prime Minister appointed as soon as possible. 

"There are domestic and global challenges that must be prioritised. 

"The increases in energy and food prices must be central to our plan. These are global challenges, with a major impact on local families."
