On the eve of another musical production tomorrow the most recent performance at Penarth's Kymin Gardens has been hailed a success.

The Gardens recently played host to a successful theatre production of Gilbert and Sullivan's comic opera, The Pirates of Penzance.

The Penarth venue, managed by The Vale of Glamorgan Council, saw an audience of more than 250 applaud and cheer on a packed-out theatre production, performed by Illyria.

Opening the show with their first song Pour O Pour the Pirate Sherry, the cast involved the audience from the get-go, spraying the first few rows of the audience with a light shower of water from their Pirates' steins to great comic effect.

The audience listened to renditions of familiar popular songs such as the Modern Major-General Song and Come Friends who Plough the Sea.

As darkness fell the show became more animated as the stage lit up bringing a magical atmosphere to the story.

Cllr Rhiannon Birch, Cabinet Member for Art, Education and the Welsh Language said: "The company are exceptionally good and extremely funny, completely entertaining and captured the audience's attention throughout. It was an excellent and thoroughly enjoyable evening and I am very much looking forward to watching Illyria's next production of A Midsummer Night's Dream.
"The success of these recent productions, performed by Illyria demonstrates the venue's capability to host outstanding events. Spaces such as these are important local attractions."

Illyria began its outdoor productions over thirty years ago, and the company's popularity has allowed them to tour all over the UK and internationally.

Illyria Theatre will be returning to the Kymin tomorrow (Friday, 2 September) at 7pm with their production of A Midsummer Night's Dream.  For tickets visit the Eventbrite webpage.
