The soft opening of the Pickford's Galley and Bar yesterday evening gave Nub News a sneak peek into the renovations that have taken place over the past few months.

We were greeted by Jeanne and Huw Pickford, the husband and wife duo, who have taken over the former Beach House Hotel.

The new restaurant has transformed the space that was there before. Now stands a modern, beachy design in keeping with the unparalleled views of the seafront.

An open kitchen, where you can now see the chef's preparing your food, was busy preparing tasters from the menus.

Huw Pickford, who had previously run the Galley restaurant at Penarth Yacht Club, has brought his team of three chefs with him to embark on the new venture.

There were different menus laid out displaying the breakfast, lunch and evening choices.

Seafood is a dominant feature in the menu and mussels and crab was on offer from the tasters. They even serve their fish and chips gluten-free.

The new bar was one of the most striking elements of the replenished space and was fully stocked with a range of spirits, soft drinks, beer on tap and an extensive wine menu. Hot drinks are also available.

We spoke to Jeanne Pickford about the renovations. She said: ''the previous owner had focused on the hotel aspect of the business and we wanted to open up the restaurant again properly.

''We got the furniture from the Fig Tree after it closed earlier this month and a local artist Dr. Eli Absi has Penarth paintings for sale which are decorating the walls.

''It's all come together now.''

Huw Pickford doesn't just stop there. As well as operating the new business he is also a volunteer for Penarth's branch of the RNLI.

His pager was fastened to his suit trousers throughout the evening, making him available for a call if and when needed. The proximity of the restaurant to the lifeboat station is an added bonus.

His crew joined the opening celebrations later that night.

Photos of the RNLI and their call-outs hung around the restaurant in a nod to his involvement with the team.

The family of five live in Penarth and have done for some years. The Pickford's three young children joined in with the opening event, sampling the tasty choices on offer.

The hotel side of the business will be kept up and will open in a couple of weeks when the food side of things has settled down.

There is definitely more to see from the Pickford's in the near future.

You can definitely tell that this is a local, hearty family business and will be a welcome addition to the Esplanade's seaside scene.
