Over £1.8 million of funding has been secured by the Vale of Glamorgan for transport schemes and Penarth is set to benefit.

A proportion of the funding will go towards exploring sustainable transport opportunities between Penarth and the Cardiff Barrage.

Drop-in sessions are being held today in the Paget Rooms from 1pm-7pm encouraging locals to provide feedback on the shortlisted options for this initiative.

Three road safety projects will receive a portion of the money, one of them tackling Cardiff Road in Dinas Powys.

Llandow will also benefit from these safety projects and grants have been secured for junction improvements in Barry.

Some funds will also be used for exploring the possibility of improving strategic transport from junction 34 of the M4 to the A48.

The funding means the programme of bus stop improvement throughout the Vale can continue, while money has been made available for work on selected active travel routes, which help promote walking and cycling.

In addition, there will be funding for child pedestrian training for five to seven-year-olds in the Vale, helping them stay safe around roads, and cycle training for year six pupils.

Pre-driver education courses will be on offer to those aged 16 and over, providing the opportunity to develop safe behaviours before getting behind the wheel.

And post-test motorbike training adds another safety level for those who have recently passed their test as does the Pass Plus Cymru scheme for new drivers.

Cllr Peter King, Vale of Glamorgan Council Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood Services and Transport, said: "I'm delighted we have secured this funding, which will go towards a large number of exciting, worthwhile schemes.

"It will enable us to improve the Vale's existing transport infrastructure, explore the possibility of making improvements to the road network and offer road users the opportunity to partake in specialist training.

"As a result, the Vale should have a safer, better connected and more reliable transport system."
