Zero Penarth, the town's only zero waste shop, will open its doors this Friday (20 November).

Situated at the 3 Windsor Arcade unit vacated by the Two Rivers tattoo parlour, the shop will sell an unpackaged range of nuts, flour, fruit and cereals.

Each item is hung on the walls in one of over 100 dispensers. Customers are encouraged to bring along permanent containers and weigh them on the scales.

"Then you fill them up with whatever they like and then weigh them again and the scales will automatically subtract the weight of the container," Alex Pearson tells Nub News.

Alex will run Zero Penarth with partner in life and business Debra Thorne.

They will also provide other environmentally-friendly products such as compostable dish cloths and package-free soaps, shampoos and body washes.

The co-owners say their passion for nature inspired them to open the shop.

"We're very outdoorsy people, so we see a lot of the damage waste is doing to the natural environment," says Debra.

"Whenever we go on holiday, we hunt out the zero waste shops wherever we go. It just feels right that Penarth gets one."

The shop is due to formally open at 10 am after Debra and Alex apply a few finishes touches.

"We've been working really hard getting everything ready and we hope visitors love it as much as we do," says Debra.

"We'll be expanding what we offer over the coming weeks and months and are very keen to hear what customers would like to see available in the shop.

"Please let us know when you visit, or send us an email or social media message."
