Four members of Penarth Yacht Club will take part in a triathlon-style challenge on June 11 to raise money for Action Medical Research for Children.

The 'Race the Sun' challenge will be held in the Brecon Beacons starting at 06:00 and participants need to complete hiking, canoeing, and cycling phases to race the setting sun and be crowned winners.

Participants will hike to the summit of Pen Y Fan for 7.5 miles, navigate a canoe course for two miles, and cycle for 55 miles along the winding Brecon Beacons roads and the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal.

Louise DeCunha, a member of Penarth Yacht Club, told Penarth Nub News: "A few of us go running and someone saw this triple event challenge with rowing, walking, and cycling.

"We thought it was quite good, so four of us got together to make a team and it all started from there."

Mrs DeCunha is also one of the organisers of a quiz night on May 1 which will help to raise funds for the children's charity.

Action Medical Research for Children is important for a few of the members, particularly Mrs DeCunha as her grandson was diagnosed with epilepsy at six months old. "Lynne [a member of Penarth Yacht Club] works with disabled children so it's something that's quite close to her heart too," said Mrs DeCunha.

"We're all mothers and grandmothers, so anything to do with children is always something that's quite emotive."

During the quiz night, there will be two sessions with four categories of questions. Guests will choose between a chicken or vegetable curry for the evening meal and can also enter a raffle to win prizes.

Guests do not have to be a member of Penarth Yacht Club to attend. "The more the merrier," said Mrs DeCunha. "You don't even have to know anybody there – everyone will be made to feel welcome.

"We've had some other really good quiz nights there so we're looking forward to this one."

The quiz will start at 19:00 at Penarth Yacht Club. Admission costs £13 and includes the meal. Guests will need to book before attending.

Penarth Yacht Club is also looking for new members. You can contact Pennie or Lynne for more information.
