Penarth would not be lumped in with Cardiff if the capital enters local lockdown, the Vale says
The eventuality of a second-wave in Cardiff would not necessarily lead to a Penarth lockdown, the Vale Council has told Nub News.
Penarth's COVID-19 approach is governed by a joint strategy devised by an alliance of the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, Cardiff Council and the Vale of Glamorgan Council.
Residents and businesses have reported fears that this could mean Penarth would be forced into a local lockdown if Cardiff is.
In the last seven days, far more cases have been recorded in Cardiff (41) than in the Vale of Glamorgan (5), causing local cafe owner Matt Holland to remark:
"The Vale should be kept separate and dealt with differently, because we're not Cardiff."
Speaking to Nub News, Deputy Leader of the Vale of Glamorgan Council Lis Burnett has put such speculation to rest:
"No, [a Cardiff spike in cases would not necessarily mean a Penarth local lockdown].
"As a region it is important that we work in partnership. However, any decision will be taken and informed by the data and analysis.
"As a consequence, decisions may well be local to particular areas or sectors."
Fears of local lockdown in Penarth peaked last week when the Caerphilly County Borough area was put into lockdown after it experienced a "sharp and rapid" increase in coronavirus cases.
This entails restrictions reminiscent of those in April being imposed, with the prohibition of indoor gatherings and travel outside the region.
Cardiff is not approaching local lockdown levels in spite of a recent rise in cases, which has been blamed on young people socialising.
