The Vale of Glamorgan Council has taken delivery of its first electric cars in the council's latest step to implement its Project Zero initiative.

The 12 Hyundai Kona EVs will soon replace several diesel-powered cars in the council's pool car fleet, which will help with its strategy for reaching net-zero by 2030.

According to the council, electric cars will reduce the council's emissions by a combined 26,304kg each year.

Cllr Peter King, cabinet member for Neighbourhood Services and Transport, said: "The council takes its responsibility for tackling climate change very seriously. That is why we have set out an ambitious plan to reach net-zero by 2030.

"Accepting the keys to our new electric vehicles marked a milestone in achieving that target. The council's work touches many people's lives in all corners of the Vale."

He continued: "Our colleagues will always need to travel to visit vulnerable residents that need our support. Our pool cars have always ensured they do this in the most cost-effective way. The new electric vehicles will now ensure they do so with minimal impact on the environment as well."

As well as significantly reducing the carbon emissions of the fleet, the 'whole life cycle' cost of each vehicle is also lower than a comparable car powered by fossil fuels, meaning the cars will also save money.

The vehicles will be maintained by the council's in-house Transport Services team, many of whom will gain new skills as part of their training to maintain the green fleet of the future.

The Kona EV cars can travel up to 300 miles on a single charge and can be recharged in less than an hour, using a rapid charge point.
