A Penarth theatre group is finally performing a play that was meant to be on stage one week before the COVID-19 pandemic two years ago.

Clue On Stage, based on the Cluedo board game, will run for five nights at Penarth Pier Pavilion and is set in the 1950s within a deserted mansion called Boddy Manor. Six guests are invited to the house and chaos ensues.

Just like the board game, the guests must find out who did it [committed the murder], where and with what weapon.

Alex Wilson, 59, owner of the Red Herring Theatre, told Penarth Nub News: "It's filled with wonderful British humour and it's a real comedy 'whodunnit'.

"Clue On Stage is a great show and it's a unique experience watching theatre at the Pavilion because you're very much in with the action. The audience is very much in with the suspects!"

Mr Wilson gave some background on how the Red Herring Theatre started. "I've been involved in theatre for quite some time, and I met my wife doing theatre," he said. "When we moved to Wales from Manchester about 16 years ago, we got involved in some theatre groups here.

"But I wanted to start something a little different. About ten years ago, I set up my own theatre company and that's where Red Herring Theatre came about.

"I've always been involved and interested in the Penarth community. I know the Pier Pavilion was in a little bit of trouble a few years ago and given flack for not having enough arts. So, I approached the then trustees and said we'd love to put on some theatre and support you."

Clue On Stage was meant to be performed just before the COVID-19 pandemic. "All the set was made, costumes arranged, actors' rehearsed, but with a week to go it was pulled due to COVID," he said.

"Everything has been in storage for two years and unfortunately, we've had to have a change of cast, but we're very lucky to be able to draw on some excellent performers.

"It'll be great to get back on stage after what's been a very long time."

Clue On Stage will run from April 26 – April 30 and tickets are available here.

Doors open at 18:45 and the play will start at 19:30.
