A FIRE has destroyed much of the main building at Penarth Athletic Club, one of the town's most important social and sporting venues.

It broke out in the early hours of this morning (Monday, 1 December) and was tackled by the South Wales Fire Service.

The alarm was raised just before 5am and the fire service reported it was extinguished by 7.50am.

The clubhouse is used by several organisations, including Penarth Rugby, Penarth Cricket and Penarth Hockey clubs.

Penarth Athletic Club has issued a statement saying no one was hurt in the incident. 

It said: "Penarth Athletic Club can confirm that a fire caused significant damage to its facilities in the early hours of Monday 1 December.

"We're pleased to report that there were no injuries to staff or visitors as a result of the incident. The safety and well-being of everyone involved remains our highest priority.

"An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway in collaboration with the relevant authorities.

"We're currently assessing the full extent of the damage and developing a recovery plan to minimise disruption to Penarth Rugby Club, Penarth Cricket Club, Penarth Ladies' Hockey Club, and the many loyal supporters and visitors who rely on the facilities."

"So many memories have been lost but thankfully no one was hurt!

An investigation into the cause is under way, with an electrical fire suspected.
