The Penarth Rugby Football Club gym has been refurbished by members of the community during the latest lockdown.

With only a few finishing touches left to apply, club Chairman Sean says he and those who helped are proud of what they have been able to achieve on the tight budget they allocated themselves.

"We used to have a gym here and it was very old-fashioned - concrete floor with a big hole in it," he tells Nub News.

"And we just thought, 'it's COVID, let's do something'. So, we raised a little bit of money, bought some equipment, sold some equipment and hey presto - here's the gym."

Penarth RFC is renowned for its community spirit, and it is the community that have made this happen.

"We all got stuck in really," Sean continues. "It was me, Matt Bolton, Chris Mortimer, Richard Merritt and Jimmy Cruthers helped us with the floor and lots of the equipment."

All in all, the DIY gym cost the club just £1,000. Costs were kept low via ingenious solutions such as repurposing metal bars and using them as weight racks.

"We've now got somewhere to train where it's wet, and it should fit over 20 people in here. We'll charge just £5 a month to our members and then our facial recognition at the front will mean it's open 24 hours a day.

"We're really happy with it! We've even got the club bear on the floor."
