Penarth Remembrance Sunday took place over the weekend and the town turned out in support for the parade and service.

The organisers said: "Over the last five years we have seen community support continue to grow for the Remembrance Day parade and each year we remember the fallen at the Garden of Remembrance before attending the church service.''

This year's Penarth Remembrance Day Parade was held on Sunday 10th November as the closest Sunday to the 11th of November - the traditional Armistice Day.

As in the last few years, this year's parade has been a joint collaboration of organisation between the Town's Royal British Legion and a committee of members of the Penarth Ex Services Club and a team of Veterans of serving and veteran military personnel from all arms of Her Majesty's Armed Forces - the Royal Navy, the British Army and the Royal Air Force.

This Veterans organising team is formed purely from volunteers who are passionate about ensuring the Remembrance Sunday tradition is not only celebrated appropriately but is perpetuated to the younger generations such that the true meaning of it is understood.

The other main aim of the team is to endeavour to make the Penarth Remembrance Day Parade a community affair; a festival of Remembrance that the Town is both a part of and has pride in.

Penarth has a history of military involvement, most notable at least two Victoria Cross winners.

The committee is proud of it's links with both the military and the with the community in which they reside.

The organisers said: ''This year we are particularly pleased with the involvement of 3 of Penarth's schools. Albert Road Primary, Victoria Primary, and Stanwell School.

''We would like to thank the many people, businesses and groups that made this year's act of remembrance a great success.

''The parade route had an amazing turn out of support and there was an even bigger gathering at the Garden of Remembrance than last year.

''There are too many to mention who need to be thanked from the local businesses that did their own window displays, the schools and local businesses that sponsor the band and arrangements.

''However, the parade could not happen without the partnership of South Wales Police (Penarth Sector) who manage the parade and the Vale of Glamorgan Council who facilitate the routes decoration each year.''

The parade was led by a band of pipes and drums for a second year which culminated with Standards, Veterans local dignitaries, members of the armed forces, cadet organisations and other local groups marching through the town to the Penarth Ex Servicemen's Club on Windsor Road.
