A Penarth photographer has raised over £2,600 for the Alzheimer's Society through selling his 2021 calendar including photos of the town.

Phil Lewis decided to raise money with a calendar after seeing how charities were missing out on donations when they had to cancel fundraising events, and being encouraged by the response to his photos in a Penarth Facebook group.

He has almost sold out of the 450 copies available, raising a total of £2,636 which will support those with dementia and their families.

"I'm chuffed to bits with it," said Phil.

"My Dad had Alzheimer's and he died of it ten years ago this year. It's always been a cause close to my heart because the Alzheimer's society was brilliant with my step mum while my Dad progressed with the disease.

"Whenever I get a chance to do any fundraising for them, I do.

"It's sad but it's actually quite amazing. Some of the comments have been people saying they're in support because their parent or grandparent had it.

"Everyone I meet seems to have been touched by it somehow. It's becoming more prevalent the longer we live, perhaps," he said.

Coronavirus has also had a significant effect on those with dementia: in England and Wales, 20.4% of people who die from the virus have previously been diagnosed with either dementia or Alzheimer's.

Phil themed the calendar around 'blue hour': the 30-60 minutes before or after sunrise and sunset.

Most of the photos of Penarth were taken during the first lockdown, which Phil compared to a ghost town.

"Penarth was really really quiet, there were no cars or people around. You get some quite unique views of Penarth because there's literally nobody about," said Phil.

"They're atmospheric, I think there's only one shot with signs of people in it.

"Penarth has never looked better so I'm glad I went out and captured it. The air was clear, it was great weather.

"That was my thing in lockdown. It was a privilege to go out for my hour's exercise at silly o'clock in the morning, when literally nobody was out.

"One of those positives of lockdown was being able to go out and capture photos I won't have the chance to again," he said.
