Work to turn Penarth Library's ground floor into an "an attractive, modern and accessible entry point" should be finished within three months, according to the Vale of Glamorgan Council.

The refurbishment began on 14 September and will cost £170,000, funded by a £120,000 Welsh Government grant and £50,000 from Vale of Glamorgan Council reserves.

Brand new computing facilities will replace the current IT suite. The space will also house a makerspace, a location where library users can gather to co-create, share resources, work on projects and network.

The makerspace project is part of a UK Government initiative to help intermediate and advanced learners to develop their skills and creativity. Those pursuing a STEM, or STEAM subjects are set to benefit from the space.

At Monday's Vale of Glamorgan Council cabinet meeting, Deputy Leader Lis Burnett commented on the necessity of the refurbishment:

"We all know that Penarth Library is a much-loved building in the town, but it is showing its age a little bit now and the availability of this money means that we will have a super duper ground floor of the library and I can't wait until that's completed."

Since the project's start date, the library has been operating a Click & Collect service out of the Pop-Up Library at the Sea Cadets Hall.
