Griffin Books, the Windsor Road independent bookshop, is donating 53 copies of Marcus Rashford's book to local schools.

They are doing so after raising £220 by raffling off a signed copy of You Are A Champion, the footballer's first publication.

The team announced on Monday that local resident Natalie David (pictured) had won the draw. A ticket could be purchased for £1 or 5 for £4, meaning over 200 tickets were bought.

Publisher Pan Macmillan donated the copy to Griffin Books as part of its nationwide drive to get as many children as possible to read the book.

They donated a total of 20,000 free copies to independent bookshops across the UK to support various crowdfunding initiatives.

The book, subtitled 'How To Be The Best You Can Be', is described by the publisher as "a positive and inspiring guide for life for young readers" and was co-written by journalist Carl Anka.

Griffin Books will donate their copies to local schools in the hope that young readers will be inspired by Rashford's story.

The 23-year-old Manchester United and England forward came from humble beginnings and was widely commended for his free school meals campaign, which started during the pandemic.

But after missing a penalty in the finals of the Euros 2020, he was subjected to online racist abuse.

Griffin Books sponsors a local football team and much of the team are football mad. They hope the raffle will show the public's support for Rashford.

"We were really pleased with the response," events and social media manager at Griffin Books Elin Davies told Nub News.

"It was unfortunate what happened at the Euros and all the abuse the players got, but the backlash to that abuse has been amazing - all the support they've got.

"I just think he's really great and the whole team's really great, and we really hope this helps people show their support for Marcus Rashford," continues Elin.

"The theme of the book is having confidence in yourself and making good steps in your life. It's motivational and we really hope it helps the kids who read it."
