South Wales firefighters will be the first in Wales to trial body-worn cameras to record footage from live incidents.

The aim is to provide a safe and secure environment at operational incidents, protect the community, as well as offer potential evidence against those displaying threatening and abusive behaviour to crews.

Footage captured at incidents will also be used for the purposes of training and only viewed by authorised personnel.

Dean Loader, Head of Training, Area Manager at the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, said: "The introduction of this new technology is a really positive innovation for us. Having these cameras will improve the way we collate situational awareness, carry out incident assessments and make command decisions.

"The cameras will play a crucial role in the Service, from staff training on the front-line to the capture of evidence in rescues and other situations where public and staff safety is paramount."

A 60 day retention period in most cases will be actioned and footage must be deleted in that time.

Full training will be given to firefighters using the Reveal D5 model cameras and people will be informed that filming will be taking place during an incident.

After the nine-month pilot scheme, the initiative will be reviewed and potentially rolled out to more places.
