Penarth Dawnstalkers are being joined by the Jacob Abraham Foundation and RNLI Penarth Lifeboat Station for their morning dip this Sunday 10 October, to mark World Mental Health Day.

The group meet daily to swim at Penarth seafront in the early hours: this Sunday the event will start at 7am.

Lizzy Wood, a member of the Dawnstalkers, shared the impact of early morning sea-swimming on her life and mental health.

"Having that connection and time in the sea, and starting your day that way is so calming," she said.

"Even embracing the cold feels good. I face that fear, I overcome it. It starts your day in the best way.

"When you're up that early, you notice the beauty around you, whether that's birds singing or the waves crashing, or the cloud formation,

"You just notice detail around you that you would never have noticed in everyday life because you're just trying to get through your day. You have time to reflect within yourself."

World Mental Health Day is an international day for global mental health education, awareness and advocacy against social stigma.

By meeting everyday to swim, the group not only reap the benefits of nature, but connect with one another for support and friendship, Lizzy explained.

"We have a WhatsApp group where we chit chat about all sorts," she said.

"For a lot of people those conversations have given them contact and friendship, and that's so important.

"Friendships have formed that have never formed before. We're a really diverse and eclectic group, everyone connects in a really meaningful way, and there's always conversations full of laughter and banter.

"The joy that it can bring in the friendships and the connections and the just the benefits that getting in the sea has such a huge impact on our mental health."
