The Vale of Glamorgan Council has secured more than £140,000 from Welsh Government to investigate how homes in Dinas Powys can become more resilient to flooding, whilst work to install flood protection measures at around 20 Sully properties has already begun.
Some 244 properties at risk of flooding in Dinas Powys were recently offered individual surveys to assess their suitability for flood resilience adaptations.
Information gathered from these surveys will be used to establish an indicative cost for work before further funding is sought.
Meanwhile, defences such as flood doors and door barriers are being installed at homes in Sully to help them better cope with flooding.
Both Dinas Powys and Sully were badly affected by the floods that hit parts of South Wales in December 2020.
Work to identify the cause of the flooding is also taking place in an effort to reduce the overall flood risk in the Dinas Powys and Sully areas.
This is being caried out in collaboration with other risk management agencies, including Natural Resources Wales and Dwr Cymru Welsh Water.
Cllr Peter King, Vale of Glamorgan Council Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood Services and Transport, said: "The flooding of properties in Dinas Powys and Sully in late 2020 brought with it serious trauma for those involved.
"I am hugely sympathetic to anyone who sees their home engulfed in water, the damage and disruption that causes and the worry that it could happen again.
"As a Council, we must make sure we do all we can to minimise the risk of such an awful event being repeated.
"I'm delighted that we have been able to secure this funding to explore ways to improve the situation in Dinas Powys and that some flood defence work has already started in Sully.
"Both developments are important steps towards ensuring vulnerable properties are better protected in the future."
