Local Conservatives have backed Penarth bowling club members' calls for greater support from the Vale of Glamorgan Council.

The Pavilion at Belle Vue Park was recently demolished to make way for a new community centre.

Club members have expressed concerns the new centre will not provide adequate changing and storage facilities.

This week, Leader of the Welsh Conservatives Andrew RT Davies and Leader of Vale Conservative Councillors George Carroll visited the club to meet with committee members Les Aubrey and Malcolm Thomas.

Mr Davies has written to the council regarding the facilities.

He said: "The whole episode regarding Belle Vue Pavilion is bizarre.

"Several residents objected to the design of the new centre, which was out of character for the area. And now it seems adequate amenities won't be provided either.

"I've written to the cabinet member and asked that suitable changing and storage facilities are made available."

Concerns have also been raised about the club's lease of the site.

Conservatives claim the council has suggested they will only agree on the lease once the club has proven they can maintain the bowling green to a suitable standard.

But the club has pointed out that lack of maintenance during lockdown periods means it will take as long as three years to do so.

Conservatives have also suggested that the green's future is under threat and could be turned into a car park.

Cllr Carroll said: "We very much hope common sense can be used and the club's lease is agreed.

"I've raised this with the council and asked them to take steps to sort this out.

"The site has been a bowling green for over a century. Its future must be guaranteed."
