PENARTH Civic Society has highlighted residents concerns over the recent decision by Vale of Glamorgan Council to remove a large number of litter bins from Penarth.
The Society recently held a meeting with Colin Smith, Head of Neighbourhood Services and he confirmed that of the 173 bins in the town, 44 have been removed. This equates to 25% of the total.
The reasons were "to reduce duplication, manage the improper use by people dumping household waste and for efficiencies".
A statement from the society says: "We have noticed that the remaining bins are now frequently overflowing and are clearly unable to cope with the amount of litter being deposited.
"Mr Smith has agreed to look at any representations that we make with a view to replacing some bins which we can prove were providing an invaluable service.
"With this in mind we would like to ask residents if they have noticed any problems caused by a lost bin. If there are any locations that you would like to bring to our attention then please email the location to [email protected].
"The Council has not scrapped the bins and it is possible that some locations could have a double bin rather than a single one to help with this problem. They have agreed to conduct litter surveys in any specific areas brought to their attention.
"Furthermore, they want to introduce more on street recycling bins to promote more recycling in the town, several of these bins have been installed already but at around £1,000 per bin there are of course budgetary restrictions preventing these becoming widespread.
"We are wondering whether there is scope for members, residents and businesses to support the buying of more recycling bins in return for their donation a plaque recognising it would be installed on the bin. We would particularly like these bins to be placed outside every school in Penarth in an attempt to promote more responsible litter disposal.
"Please email your thoughts on bins you would like to see return, bins that could be doubles rather than singles and whether you would be willing to partake in a crowdfunding initiative."
