Penarth Carers Secure Much-Needed Donations Amid COVID-19 Strain
Two care organisations in Penarth have secured four-figure donations from a leading housebuilder.
Marie Curie Hospice, based on Bridgeman Road, and MHA Ty Gwyn Care Home, on Stanwell Street, are the latest groups to receive Community Champions funding from Persimmon Homes East Wales.
Persimmon Homes East Wales has been donating to causes that support the elderly throughout the COVID-19 crisis.
Marie Curie has secured £1,000 of funding. The charity cares for more than 40,000 terminally ill people each year, including at its Penarth hospice, as well as caring for people in the area in their own homes.
William Baggus and his partner have been fundraising for the hospice during the lockdown period and was delighted to secure the grant.
"COVID-19 has halted most of Marie Curie's fundraising activities so we have been running virtual events to keep donations coming in," he said.
"We have run quizzes and a murder mystery, raising more than £1,500.
"This money from Persimmon is a tremendous boost. It's great to see a large company like Persimmon getting involved with the local community."
MHA Ty Gwyn Care Home is run by older person's charity Methodist Homes (MHA). It offers nursing care for 45 residents, as well as providing them with a range of activities.
Valentina Stan, care home manager, said: "This £1,000 will help us with additional costs we have faced during the pandemic, such as the increased need for PPE.
"As a charity, we rely on support from organisations to help fund services like our music therapy for people living with dementia and we are extremely grateful to Persimmon for their support."
Persimmon Homes gives away up to £744,000 a year through Community Champions.
