The Vale of Glamorgan Council has agreed to increase the number of parking spaces at Penarth Esplanade and adjacent streets, following a consultation period.

In Monday's meeting, the council also agreed to implement an order preventing caravans and large goods vehicles from parking overnight on Cliff Hill and Cliff Road.

The report says the majority of changes proposed involve relaxing rules on parts of the road that are currently subject to waiting or stopping restrictions, with the introduction of two hour limited waiting parking bays between 10am and 7pm (no return within two hours) on roads which are currently unrestricted.

During the 21-day consultation period the council received 14 formal objections and four written comments.

Concerns included accommodating for resident parking and how the new scheme would impact existing traffic management on the road.

The council also received supporting comments, including that the increased turn-over of spaces will have a positive impact on local businesses by enabling space for more visitors and that action needs to be taken to reduce the number of cars parked on double yellow lines.

Councillor Benjamin Grey said the new parking scheme "goes to the heart of what people want to see the use of this area for this parking as."

"For me it has to be about allowing people to be able to access to the seafront and its businesses.

"For too long, certain areas have been allowed to slip and the ability for us to enforce rules has diminished," he said.

Vale of Glamorgan Council leader Neil Moore said: "This is a very good way forward and I'm very glad it's been brought here today."
