Parking enforcement camera goes live at Pont Y Werin bridge car park

The automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) camera recently installed in the Cardiff Marina car park has gone live today.

The car park, situated immediately by the entrance to the Cardiff side of the Pont Y Werin bridge, had previously been signposted as a private car park reserved for berth holders in the marina.

Boat owners would place a sticker in their window to avoid ticketing, but according to some, the car park was being increasingly misused by visitors to the Marina.

Now visitors may use the car park but for a pay and display fee, whilst berth holders must enter their details on the system to avoid being detected by the camera and charged.

Although resident and sailor Alan King seldom used the car park, he welcomes the arrival of the new technology:

"It was becoming increasingly popular with the opening of the coffee bar, and as a place to park while you went for a walk," he told Nub News.

"So, on occasion, it was full and not from the marina - that's when they got the windscreen stickers and patrols.

"I guess the new system will generate income and be more cost effective for them."

For non-berth holders, pay and display parking fees will be as follows:

Up to 1 hour - £2

Up to 2 hours - £3

Up to 3 hours - £4

Up to 4 hours - £5

Up to 5 hours - £6

Up to 12 hours - £17

Up to 24 hours - £10
