One-way system ends - New social distancing signage arrives in town centre

New coronavirus safety signage has been installed in the form of bollard covers.

The new covers urge shoppers to maintain a 2-metre distance, wear a face covering, to follow arrows and queue markers and to keep their hands clean.

They replace the town's one-way system, which was introduced in June. It was marked by signage on lamp posts and painted arrows on the pavement.

Each side of Windsor Road was designated a one-way directional system (Sainsbury's to Barclays and Lloyd's Bank to Wasons).

Similar routes were also put in place on Glebe Street, Stanwell Road and in Windsor Arcade.

The system was widely objected to and frequently defied.

Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Education and Deputy Leader of the Council, Lis Burnett, said:

"The previous pedestrian traffic measures were originally put in place to conform with Welsh Government guidance on town centres.

"As we move forward, and town centres adapt to the challenges of trading whilst living with Covid-19, the reminders will help residents to keep themselves and others safe."
