The timetables for Penarth train services have been revealed for December the 15th - May the 16th 2020.

TFW have said that the new timetables mean Penarth will see:

  • Changes to train times
  • Extra Sunday services
  • More seats on key services

Here's what it means for South Wales:
  • Extra Sunday services with earlier morning and later evening services across the region, a brand new Maesteg Sunday service and much enhanced Sunday services on the Rhymney and Cardiff Bay lines.
  • Newer and refurbished trains start to roll out on Maesteg and Ebbw Vale services with charging points, air-conditioning, more seats, passenger information screens and table seating.
  • More seats on weekday Taff Valley services with 6500 extra spaces a week.
  • Amendments to departure and arrival times for some service as a result of the introduction of faster GWR services between South Wales and London.

However, the replacements to ''pacer-trains'' on Penarth lines has been delayed.

TFW state on their website: ''Whilst our original plan was to take all our Class 143 and 142 Pacer trains out of operation by the end of 2019, we now expect these to continue to run on the local Cardiff and Valley line services for a short time into 2020.

''The aim is to protect capacity on these routes whilst we await the delayed delivery of our refurbished fleet of Class 769 trains that will start to be out and about on our network from Spring 2020.

''As newer trains become available, we will continue to phase out our Pacer fleet, ensuring there is no capacity impact as a result.''

Pacer trains were built as a stop-gap to deal with a lack of trains but they have many have still continued to be use across Wales.
