A new barbershop has opened its doors on Herbert Terrace in Penarth and can book appointments for Mondays.

Kyriacos Kanias, 53, also known as Giggs, has set up The Old Bear Barbershop from his sister's salon, Hair At Six, and is in the process of selling his old barbershop in Ely, Cardiff.

Mr Kanias told Penarth Nub News: "Because I live in Penarth and my sister moved to a bigger salon, she asked whether I wanted to set up in her shop and it was an ideal situation for me so I could work and live in the same area.

"I was looking at selling the property in Ely anyway and I've been running that business in Cardiff for over 25 years now."

The Old Bear Barbershop has been operating from Hair At Six for almost two weeks and the response has been positive, with customers from Mr Kanias's previous business following him to the new premises. "It's all been really positive feedback and I think I'm one of the very few that are open on a Monday," he said.

"I've always worked on a Monday, and I take my day off mid-week, so I suppose I stand out from the competition by opening up on a Monday."

Its name also pays homage to Penarth. "I was toying with names because my previous business was just called Giggs, but I wanted to get away from that," he said. "We sort of had a brainstorm and Penarth in Welsh means Bears Head and the Penarth emblem has two or three bears on it. The 'Old' part just comes from my age!"

His new working arrangement is the right fit for Mr Kanias and the business. "Obviously I want the business to keep picking up, but I'm not looking to go big. I've got my spot in Penarth and I'm comfortable there."
