The Unreliable Narrator is originally from Northamptonshire and has lived in Penarth for almost five years. They will be writing a book review for Penarth Nub News every Saturday, whether it's based on a treasure found in a second-hand book shop or a glossy hardback from Griffin Books.

When we asked The Unreliable Narrator why it's important for them to share their book reviews with the people of Penarth, their answer was simply to bring the community closer together through a shared passion for reading. "I didn't grow up around here, so when you don't have the community hub of the school run or anything like that, it can be quite hard to make connections unless you already know people here," says The Unreliable Narrator.

"For me, it's about inspiring people to pick up a book and read, or to think about the books that they are reading in a wider context. It's a bit of encouragement on both sides, really."

Their love of reading stems from early childhood. "I grew up in a really remote part of Northamptonshire and it was the only thing my sister and I had to do," says The Unreliable Narrator. "We were surrounded by books, and it meant you could travel to another world without actually having to go anywhere."

Living in Penarth for almost five years, The Unreliable Narrator will never look back. "I love it here. It's really, really wonderful!" But what do they love most about living in Penarth? "I guess it's a combination of things really. It's great to be able to go to the sea every day, to watch it change day by day and season by season. But there's also a really nice community feel here.

"I think it's really important to preserve it [Penarth], keep it moving forward, and all the independent shops make living here really special."

So why do they believe it's important for everyone to pick up a book and read? "It's an education. You can learn so much from a book and, not just non-fiction, but fiction from certain eras or based around particular ideas. It's just a wonderful way to expand your mind."

The Unreliable Narrator's book reviews will be published every Saturday morning.
