The mayor of the Vale of Glamorgan has been re-elected for a second term.

Councillor Jayne Norman, of the Llantwit First Independent party, was re-elected during the annual general meeting of Vale of Glamorgan council on Monday, May 10.

The mayor holds a ceremonial role, representing the council in public events, and chairing meetings of the council. The post is usually held for a year. It is a separate position from the council leader.

The annual general meeting of the council was the first to be broadcast live online since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. The council had previously been uploading recordings of public meetings days after they were held, but faced criticism for the delays.

The mayor was nominated for re-election by her party colleague Cllr Gwyn John, who said: "Cllr Jayne Norman has been on this council since 2017. She has worked very hard over the last year and previous years as a councillor.

"But last year in her role as mayor, it has been extremely difficult for her and we're absolutely delighted to nominate her to continue her role as mayor. I'm sure Cllr Norman this year will be able to carry out her duties to excellence."

On being re-elected, she said: "Thank you to all for my appointment. I hope this year will see us get back to as close as possible to normal."

Cllr Rhiannon Birch was also elected as deputy mayor. The Labour councillor is also leader of Penarth Town Council.

The council's leader, deputy leader, and cabinet remain unchanged this year.
