Local Schools Partner Up with Plastic Free Penarth

Today local schools met with Plastic Free Penarth to clean up the beach and find out more about reducing their plastic use.

The event started with the students venturing onto the beach and esplanade to collect any rubbish they found.

This was part of the Autumn Beach Clean Summit to Sea, a campaign designed by Surfers Against Sewage.

They then investigated their findings with the help of Julie Giles, the Vale's education officer from Keep Wales Tidy.

Over 13 bags of rubbish were filled during the beach clean and the children were enthusiastic to discover more about the items they found and the threats they caused to wildlife and pollution.

The schools were encouraged to discuss the ways that rubbish came to be in the oceans and on our beaches so that they could make the link to some potential solutions.

Ysgol Pen y Garth, Westbourne, St. Joseph's, Stanwell and Cogan came along to the event, with over 50 pupils in attendance.

Stanwell School's eco-committee gave a presentation on their plastic free efforts and the changes they have made.

Gideon Calder, the organiser of the event, said: ''We hope these type of events will encourage schools to get involved in more regular environmental activism.

''We want the initiatives to come from the children themselves and for them to get actively with their own ideas.

''We hope these events will inspire them to get involved and collaborate with other schools and pupils.''

The pupils took part in activities such as designing a campaign name for plastic-free initiatives in schools and discussions on how they could tackle the problem.

Julie Giles said: ''We need you to all make changes now.

''Think of things that your school can do to make a difference.

''If everyone can work together than real changes can happen and Penarth can then work with other communities to help them.

''Everyone is here for the same outcome, to reduce plastic.''
