Elderly care home residents will be reliving happy holiday memories thanks to a special initiative.

Bethel House Residential Care Home, in Dinas Powys, has contacted local churches to ask parishioners to send postcards from their travels this summer to share with residents.

The scheme is spearheaded by Sara Harris and Julie Carpenter, the Activities Co-ordinators at Bethel House who started the postcard project last year after hearing about similar schemes run by Care Homes in other parts of the UK.

Julie said: "We had a really successful first year when we received 36 postcards.

"The residents are looking forward to this year's postcards coming to Bethel House to remember holidays past.

"It means a lot to our residents, they love it. It brings back good memories and stimulates discussions.

"We've found it particularly beneficial for those living with dementia."

Postcards are read out to residents before their activity period, when they also have the opportunity to look at the cards and enjoy the messages and pictures sent from various holiday locations.

This year a request to take part in the postcard project has been sent to 29 churches across the Cardiff and Vale area in the hope that even more church-goers will participate.
