Penarth's independent bookshop, Griffin Books, reopened today for the first time in three months, marking the start of a new month and their movements towards a new normal.

They said: ''It has been a long three months, but the support we have received from the local and wider Penarth community has been overwhelming. We look forward to seeing you back in the shop very soon.

"Things may look and feel a little different for a while, but we're confident that these measures will keep us all safe, and whilst it may not be the usual experience, it will be lovely to see all of you again.

"Today we open our doors to customers for the first time in over 3 months. We can't wait to see you all. We're open from 10.00 am -12.00 noon and social distancing measures are in place.

"We are all learning to find our way through this. Please be patient with us whilst we find the right balance between providing you with the best service we can and keeping our staff members and others safe."

Their new opening hours are as follows:

• Monday – Saturday: 10.00 am – 12.00 noon (2 - 4 for click and collect).

Please be aware that the following social distancing measures will be in place:

• Only two customers (or one family) will be permitted in the shop at a time.

• Customers must sanitise their hands - using our sanitising station located by the door – before entering the shop. If you do need to browse, please keep book handling to a minimum for your own and other customers' safety.

• We will be accepting contactless/card payments only. Contactless would be preferable where possible, though we will sanitise the card machine in between payments where entering a PIN is required. We will not have a cash float in the shop at this stage.

• A one-way system will be in operation – please follow the arrows as you enter the shop.

• Please be respectful of other customers and staff members and adhere to the 2-metre distancing measures indicated on the shop floor.

• There will only be two members of staff in the shop at any one time, who will be dealing with customers and restocking shelves. The rest of the team will be working from home and can handle enquiries, orders and payments, so please contact us by email rather than phone if you would like to order a book or are looking for recommendations.

• Outside of the above opening hours, time will be spent cleaning the shop and processing and delivering online orders.

The shop will continue to offer an online ordering and delivery service beyond Wednesday 1 July. To do this you can email [email protected]

Their free home delivery service within the Penarth area (excludes Sully, Dinas Powys and Llandough) will continue to be available for customers who are shielding, self-isolating and/or unable to travel to the shop. All other online orders will be posted to customers via Royal Mail (£3 P&P per parcel applies).
