Blu Hair Design in Penarth, situated in the Washington Buildings, has come to the rescue with hair care tips during the coronavirus lockdown.

Hair-Life in Self-Isolation:

As our skin may be benefitting from a lack of makeup or even more rigorous than usual skin-care routines, our hair may suffer during isolation.

You may be tempted to do something irrational or drastic during this reflection time, however, we are just as eager to change and restyle your hair so please wait for the professionals!

The world is on a reset and we are getting ready to reset your hair.

In the meantime, here are some top tips from the team at Blu Hair Design.

Fixing Your Roots:

Firstly, for those who regularly dye their hair, a fear of roots will be at the forefront of your hair worries. Please do not resort to a box dye no matter how tempted you get during your weekly shop to the supermarket.

It takes more than one box colour to achieve the desired look as the box colour may not match the colour you already have, it could end up uneven or would not mix appropriately with the dye already on your hair.

More importantly, it will be so much more difficult for us to return your hair to its original colour and condition on your return to the salon.

If you are really worried about your roots you could test out a zig-zag parting to feather out your roots more or invest in a spray-on root cover-up as they are not permanent or as damaging to your hair.

Bandanas are the perfect summer accessory that could cover up your roots in all your self-isolation selfies.

Try Some Styling:

Secondly, if you suddenly find yourself with more free time than ever before, despite re-arranging the cupboards and giving your dog a makeover, you could start practising your hair-styling skills to ensure you remain looking glamourous.

You could start using headbands and scarves more often or try out all the hair accessories you've had in the draw for years but never gotten around to using.

Feeling more creative? Scour YouTube for tutorials on styling. Looks we love include; hair braiding techniques; space buns; or, attempting sock curls if you're avoiding using heat.

Experiment with the stock-piles of hair products you've had in the house for years, freeing up space for us to recommend the perfect products for your hair type and style upon return.

Hair Masks:

Not leaving the house could be a blessing for your hair care routine if you approach it with the right attitude.

Let's talk hair-masks. These could be applied up to twice a week to keep your hair happy and healthy. We recommend using Sebastian homecare masks or Olaplex for bleached hair.

Apply to damp hair to the mid-lengths and ends after shampooing your hair.

Most masks contain a great deal of protein so it is best not to exceed the recommended amount of time of 10 to 20 minutes as there is such a thing as too much protein in the hair.

Rinse off and condition as normal. For a deeper penetration apply clingfilm around the head while the hair mask is on.

If using Olaplex, the instructions differ slightly as you only need to dampen the hair before use, and then follow your washing routine after rinsing off.

Olaplex can also be left on the hair for longer, even overnight! If you are looking to multi-task with a work conference call and a hair mask, simply dampen hair and apply the treatment by scrunching up through the ends for a beach waves style.

If you do not have any trustworthy treatments in the house then olive oil could be a sufficient substitute.

You could either apply olive oil to the ends of the hair after washing or make a DIY hot oil treatment by heating olive oil gently in a bowl inside a bowl of hot water.

Once warm apply with fingertips from the ends upwards to hydrate hair or soothe a dry scalp. To wash off apply shampoo to head before water to emulsify the oil.

Hair tends to grow faster in the summer so with spring approaching now could be the perfect time to lay off using the heat and treating the hair at home in order to allow your natural keratin to help your hair become stronger, healthier and longer.

There are a few styling techniques to help those avoiding the hairdryer while at home. Naturally wavy hair? Use a moose or serum after washing to style while drying. Long hair? Try braiding with a serum running through the ends for a tousled look after towel drying. Short hair? Apply a gel or a flexible wax to create more texture. Lastly, if possible try to go longer in between hair washes while you are not leaving the house to allow your natural oils to be restored and repair your hair naturally.

The Risky: 'Cutting Your Own Hair':

If you feel like you need to cut your own hair (please only as a last resort) please remember the following: if you are desperate for a fringe trim do not cut horizontally as it can make your fringe jump, only point cut to create softness, and with split-ends simply dust over the ends while the hair is dry.
