GALLERY: New-look Esplanade begins to take shape

The first phase of major Esplanade road works was completed last week. The pavement outside Penarth Yacht Club has been extended, with precast concrete slabs replacing the existing 'KEEP CLEAR' area.

The majority of bollards have been installed, demarcating the no-parking zone and Romeo by the Sea's outdoor seating area.

Works elsewhere along the Esplanade are continuing. The two existing zebra crossings are to be improved with new tarmac, bollards and extended pavements, while a new pedestrian crossing will be added at the junction of Bridgeman Road and the Esplanade.

They are due to be completed by mid-August. Some Esplanade businesses previously expressed frustration at the timing of the works.

Huw Pickford, owner and founder of Pickford's Galley and Bar, today told Nub News that his business has suffered a loss of revenue as a result of the disruption.

"It definitely tidies the front up," he said. "I just don't know why they've done it in summertime. It's killed a bit of our trade with the dust and the noise, all the big lorries along the seafront - but hopefully it's nearly done now."
