Foxy's Deli: A Donation, An Overworked Nurse and Acts of Kindness Amid Troubling Times
Foxy's Deli in Penarth discusses their local stories of positivity and kindness since they have started up their delivery-only service in the wake of the coronavirus.
Sian Foxy said: ''This story just shows how amazing the community has been. In the first few days of the changes, a customer rang in and said: 'I visit Foxy's around 3 times a week which is around £25 so can I give that to you'. I said you can, but when I'm out for my deliveries, I will give it to someone that needs it more than us.
''A nurse came in the next day and said 'can you help me, I need to get food delivered to my mum who has early-onset dementia and needs specific meals'. We started making up a load for her.
''Whilst she was waiting we found out that she was off to help her mum after a 48-hour shift in the x-ray department of the hospital and she had to get meals sorted out before going back to work the next day.
''It was then that I decided to give her the £25 that we were gifted because she was someone that really needed it. She didn't want to take it but we insisted. This is the kind of thing that makes you smile despite everything else that's going on.
''The woman who gave us the money originally won't know where it went but we made sure it was given to someone who it would really help.
''Since going out on deliveries I have also realised how many people live alone. We sent 10 meals to a 91 year -old man because his family are quite far away.
''A lot of those living on their own are around the same age as my mum. So, I decided to get them all connected and now they all ring each other even though they've never met before.
''They have created a community.''
The local deli has been adapting to the times and is providing a delivery service to residents whilst their store remains closed to walk-in customers.
Sian Foxy said: ''It means I am able to keep the staff on and pay them – young ones with licences can deliver and others can prepare the meals and boxes. We are not allowed walk-in customers at all and our drivers are going out sanitised and following all of the health and safety guidelines.''
