Flooding unlikely this week, says Natural Resources Wales
Less rainfall is expected in the coming days than in December's floods, but residents remain nervous.
Natural Resources Wales (NRW) has released a statement to calm the nerves of traumatised flood victims amid forecasts of further heavy rain this week.
It comes after much of low-lying Sully, Dinas Powys, Cogan and Llandough were severely flooded on 23 December.
Some residents have voiced concern that relevant authorities have not done enough to ensure the events of Christmastime are not repeated.
But NRW's statement, released online, states that only South Pembrokeshire is due to flood this week and that rainfall is due to be considerably lighter than was the case last month.
"Faced by a forecast of more rain, Dinas Powys residents' nervousness is completely understandable given their recent, awful experiences of flooding," it said.
"Having checked, I can advise that there is currently only one flood alert in Wales, for South Pembrokeshire, which is tide-related.
"Based on our Cogmoors rain gauge it seems the Dinas Powys area saw approx. 23mm of rain on Saturday 16 January, and a fairly dry day yesterday (Sunday).
"Looking at the forecast, it appears that Dinas Powys might expect a total of 40-60mm over Monday-Wednesday this week. Wednesday 20 Jan is forecast to be the wettest day with perhaps 26mm.
"Though this will naturally be of concern to residents, the forecast is for less intense rainfall than that experienced in either February 2020 (47mm over 18 hours) or on 23 December 2020 (57mm over 13 hours, including 4¼ hours in which 46mm fell)."
Many residents link the severity of December's flooding to poorly managed drainage solutions and the saturation of the nearby Taylor Wimpey construction site.
Resident Dave Watkins, who has provided evidence of surface run-off from the site, says:
"It is essential that Taylor Wimpey take urgent measures to deal with this problem without any further delay."
Another resident commented:
"We in Highbridge had 4ft of water in house on the 23rd December. Feeling very nervous about the coming rain."
