A flood alert has been issued for parts of Penarth and surrounding areas by Natural Resources Wales.

This alert comes as heavy rainfall has increased the water levels of the River Ely posing a possible risk to parts of Penarth, Cogan and Llandough.

Water levels at the Cadoxton River have also increased, creating a potential risk to Sully, Dinas Powys, and Cosmeston.

Yesterday NRW released a statement to ease the nerves of those who faced flooding last December, saying that only South Pembrokeshire is due to flood this week and that rainfall is due to be considerably lighter than was the case last month.

The flood alert is the first of three possible alert levels issued by Natural Resources Wales. The warning covers smaller, community-level areas where flooding of properties from rivers or the sea is expected.

Alerts cover large areas where flooding is possible from rivers or the sea.

The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for rain on Tuesday, which is in place until 12am on Friday.
