Dinas Powys junction safe despite crash, says Vale Council

The Vale of Glamorgan Council considers the Cross Common Road junction to be safe and will not take action to "improve" it, Nub News understands.

This comes after a Nissan Micra collided with a bus at the junction on 28 May. No one was severely injured in the incident.

Following the crash, local Plaid Cymru Party argued that the Council should act to make the junction safer. Some members of the public told Nub News they agree, though others do not.

In a text seen by Nub News sent to Plaid Community Councillor Chris Franks, a Vale of Glamorgan Council officer responded by explaining why the junction meets safety standards.

The officer, whose name has not been provided, wrote:

- Although the old junction "suffered poor visibility to oncoming traffic", it was replaced in February 2017 to permit the demolition of the old bridge over the Cadoxton River.

- It was designed "meet necessary turning movements and minimum visibility requirements and has been subject to a series of road safety audits to ensure it is as safe as reasonably practicable given the constraints / alignment of the existing A4055 road which it joins."

- The 28 May accident took place when a van flashed his headlights to let a bus pull out. The driver of the Micra travelling in the opposite direction "had not seen or realised the bus was pulling out from the junction and collided with it". No action is being taken by the police against either driver.

- According to the 'personal injury collision record' provided by the Welsh Government, no one has been injured in a collision in the vicinity since the new junction was constructed in 2017.

- "I therefore cannot agree with your assessment of the new Cross Common Road junction and consider that it has an excellent safety record with no further action required at this time."

In spite of this, Cllr Griggs reiterated his plea for the Vale Council to conduct a review of the junction.

"Many people have warned that this junction is sub standard," he said. "Drivers race down the hill from the station direction. People warned that an accident would happen.

"Even now after a collision the Vale Council is determined not to act. It is hard to understand."

Fellow Plaid community councillors Richard Grigg said, "We have been told by residents that they avoid turning right onto Cardiff Road from Cross Common.

"This new junction is on a bend and motorists tend to swing into the middle of the road. What does the Vale want before it acts, a serious injury?"
